Is this the service your vehicle needs?

Timing chain issues present differently depending on whether the chain is worn or has already jumped timing. Identify your situation below:

Common signs

  • Met or approached manufacturer mileage / age replacement interval
  • Metallic rattling or chattering noise on cold engine startup (lasts 2-5 seconds)
  • Engine management light illuminated with camshaft / crankshaft correlation codes (e.g. P0011, P0340)
  • Engine running roughly or feeling sluggish due to slight timing slack
  • Bought a used vehicle with high mileage and unknown timing chain service history

Urgent signs

  • Loud continuous metallic clattering from the timing cover while idling
  • Engine cut out suddenly while driving and refuses to restart
  • Starter motor spins rapidly with abnormal lack of compression

Swipe for urgent warning signs

CRITICAL NOTE: If your timing chain or belt has already snapped while driving, DO NOT attempt to restart the engine. Snapped timing components can cause valve and piston collision (internal engine damage). A routine mobile replacement applies to intact chains; post-failure damage requires diagnostic assessment.

Plain-English explanation

How a timing chain works & why timely replacement is essential

The timing chain is a precision-engineered steel chain that synchronises the rotation of the engine's crankshaft and camshaft. This ensures that the engine's valves open and close at exact microsecond intervals relative to the position of the pistons.

Over time, engine oil degradation, heat cycles, and mechanical wear cause the chain links to stretch and the plastic guides or hydraulic tensioners to wear down. As slack develops, the timing between pistons and valves shifts out of tolerance.

Read the full explanation +

On popular commercial van platforms like the Renault Trafic / Vauxhall Vivaro 1.6 & 2.0 dCi, as well as BMW N47/N57 engines, timing chain wear is a documented issue. Left untreated, a worn chain will jump teeth on the sprockets or snap entirely, causing catastrophic valve-to-piston impact that can destroy the cylinder head.

Replacing the timing chain, tensioners, guide rails, and sprockets as a complete kit restores factory timing precision, eliminates engine rattle, and prevents multi-thousand-pound engine rebuilds.

Vehicle-specific note: Engine layout check: Some vehicles use a traditional rubber timing belt (cambelt) or an oil-immersed 'wet belt' instead of a dry steel timing chain. ADL verifies your exact engine code from your registration plate before quoting to ensure the correct component kit is dispatched.

Exactly what is included

A transparent scope before the booking, with vehicle-dependent recommendations explained separately.

1. Always Included in Service

Core parts and procedures standard with every timing chain job:

  • Complete OEM-spec timing chain kit (primary chain, secondary chains where applicable)
  • New hydraulic timing chain tensioner(s)
  • New upper, lower, and guide rails / dampening slides
  • Crankshaft and camshaft timing sprockets
  • New front crankshaft oil seal and timing cover gasket set
  • Engine locking tool alignment & manual rotation timing check
  • Fresh engine oil refill and new OEM oil filter element
  • Post-assembly engine start test, live diagnostic check & fault code clear

2. Recommended & Vehicle-Dependent

Components replaced at the same time to save duplicate labour cost:

  • Auxiliary drive belt (fan belt) replacement
  • Water pump (if driven by or located behind the timing assembly)
  • Fresh engine coolant flush and refill
  • Crankshaft pulley bolt (single-use stretch bolt)
  • Sump pan reseal or gasket replacement

3. Not Automatically Included

Services requiring separate diagnostics or major overhaul:

  • Internal cylinder head or valve repair if the chain snapped before appointment
  • Replacement of bent valves, damaged pistons, or cracked rocker arms
  • Towing or heavy winch recovery of immobilized non-rolling vehicles
  • Unrelated electrical or fuelling fault repairs

Can a timing chain replacement be completed mobile?

Yes! Many timing chain replacements can be carried out directly at your home driveway, workplace car park, or commercial yard without towing your vehicle to a workshop.

Suitable locations

  • Private home driveway or residential parking space
  • Workplace car park with site manager approval
  • Secure farm yard, fleet depot, or trade unit

Ground & access

  • Firm, level ground (tarmac, concrete, or paved surface — no steep slopes or deep gravel)
  • Minimum 1.2 metres of clearance around the front and side of the vehicle for tool access
  • Safe off-street working area (cannot be performed on narrow public highways or red routes)

Weather & safety

  • Mobile canopy used during rain or light inclement weather
  • Work rescheduled if extreme sub-zero weather or severe storm warnings occur

If your vehicle requires subframe removal or engine removal for rear-mounted chains (such as certain longitudinal BMW or Audi models), Aaron will inform you upfront during vehicle lookup.

What affects the price of a timing chain replacement?

Engine Code & Layout

Transverse 4-cylinder engines are faster to access than complex V6 or rear-chain engines.

Parts Spec & Kit Completeness

We use high-grade OE-quality timing kits (OE matching quality tensioners, guides, and sprockets).

Associated Servicing

Included fresh engine oil and filter change preserves the new hydraulic tensioner life.

Water Pump & Aux Drive

Adding a water pump or auxiliary belt during strip-down is significantly cheaper than doing it later.

The issue. Loud metallic rattle on cold startup; engine warning light intermittently showing timing correlation code.

What Aaron did. Mobile timing chain replacement at customer's farm yard. Replaced timing chain, guide rails, tensioner, front seal, oil & filter.

The result. Rattle completely eliminated, smooth idle restored, zero fault codes on post-test scan.

Aaron came out to our yard in Market Drayton to replace the timing chain on my Trafic van. Saved me towing it to a main dealer and costing double. Honest, efficient, and top-class work!
